Signs you need wallpapering — and what to do next

Wallpaper can transform a room, but it doesn’t last forever. With 25 years' decorating experience in Polegate and Eastbourne, Bushell & Co see the common failure modes and know which problems can be patched and which need a full rehang. Use this checklist to identify the signs you need wallpapering — and practical next steps to get the room back to a premium finish.

1. Bubbling, blistering or lifting seams

Why it happens: Moisture, poor adhesion or an old paste can cause the paper to lift or bubble, especially around windows, doors and skirting boards.

What to do now: Test a small area. If bubbles flatten with a seam roller and a small dab of paste the problem may be repairable. If the paper repeatedly re-lifts, it’s a sign the paste or backing has failed and a full strip and rehang is the long-term fix.

2. Visible seams, pattern mismatch or shrinkage

Why it happens: Older papers can shrink over time or were hung with minimal allowance for pattern repeat. High humidity rooms accelerate shrinkage.

What to do now: Small mismatches on feature walls can sometimes be concealed with a decorative border or picture rail. For wider pattern drift across multiple drops you’ll need an experienced paperhanger to strip and rehang with correct matching and drop allowance.

3. Tearing, frayed edges or damage around sockets

Why it happens: Heavy wear areas, DIY removals or poorly cut service holes lead to torn edges that look untidy.

What to do now: Minor tears can be patched using matching remnants and adhesive. For panels with multiple repairs, replace the affected repeats or re-paper the whole wall for a seamless finish.

4. Stains, discolouration or mould growth

Why it happens: Rising damp, leaks or surface condensation can stain paper and encourage mould. Seaside properties around Eastbourne are particularly prone to salt-laden air and condensation issues in older sash windows.

What to do now: Investigate the source — patching paper without fixing the moisture problem is a false economy. For mould, treat the substrate with a fungicidal wash, allow to dry, then repair plaster and re-paper. Severe damp often needs a plaster repair or a breathable lining paper before redecoration.

5. Multiple layers, brittle backing or old paste residue

Why it happens: Repeated papering builds up backing layers. Old paste becomes brittle and won’t re-adhere to new coverings.

What to do now: Stripping back to the substrate is usually required. That creates a stable base for lining paper or a skim coat. Dustless sanding and professional skim coating keep disruption low in occupied homes.

DIY repairs vs calling a professional

DIY repair makes sense for single small bubbles, a lifted seam or a tiny tear. But call a professional when:

  • The damage covers more than one wall or involves pattern repeat
  • There are signs of damp, mould or structural cracking
  • Rooms are tall, have stairs or awkward corners where pattern matching is difficult
  • You expect a premium finish for a living room, Victorian bay or rental property

Bushell & Co specialise in tricky matches and feature walls around Eastbourne. For customers who value neat mitred corners, invisible joins and a clean finish we recommend a survey before starting work.

What a pro will do on site

  • Inspect substrate for moisture, cracks and previous failures
  • Strip old paper correctly (scoring, steaming or chemical paste remover)
  • Repair plaster, apply a skim coat where needed and dustless sand for minimal mess
  • Apply lining paper to stabilise the wall and reduce future shrinkage
  • Hang chosen paper with correct paste for the product (paste-the-wall vs paste-the-paper) and adjust for pattern repeat
  • Finish edges at skirtings, windows and switches with neat mitres and seal if appropriate

Choosing the right paper and paste

Match the product to the room: vinyl-backed papers tolerate kitchens and hallways; non‑woven or paste-the-wall products are easier to remove and good for older plaster. For high-repeat patterns or textured papers, choose a paperhanger experienced in pattern matching — mistakes here are expensive to fix.

Next steps — practical checklist

  1. Identify the primary issue (bubbles, damp, tears).
  2. If moisture is present, stop and find the source.
  3. Test a small repair if the issue is localised.
  4. For larger jobs book a site survey to confirm substrate condition and necessary prep.
